The stability of emotion differs among different persons. Think about the people around you. Some people usually have nervous moods like a roller coaster, an intense experience, while others have a small varying range, relaxed and peaceful. We might say that one person often feels tense, with strong fluctuation of emotions, while another remains generally calm and maintains a stable mood. So what does science say about which way of feeling is better? Research finds that the secret of happiness is of a mild contentment. True happiness isn’t found in extreme highs-like moments of euphoria-or very low lows. Instead, it comes from a mild mood, a gentle sense of satisfaction that stays with us over time. That brings us to a very useful idea: You should find a point of balance and the ideal mood is moderate strain and contentment. Let’s break this idea down into two parts. First, moderate strain is not the same as harmful stress. It’s the kind of positive tension that helps us focus, learn, and grow. Without any challenge, we might feel too loose, without direction. Second, this is balanced by contentment-a calm and grateful attitude toward everyday life. This isn’t about big exciting moments; it’s the ability to appreciate small good things, which helps reduce major fluctuations of emotions. So, whether you’re naturally more like a roller coaster or more like a quiet lake, you can learn to find your balance.

PTE SST – Modern Poetry

My lectures are going to presume no special knowledge on your part.

I see this as a course that’s an introduction to the literature of a period, to modern poetry. We’ll be studying several poets in some detail.

The presumption is that they all reward and demand a certain amount of close reading. At the same time, I do mean to give you some sense of the period in which they’re writing, some sense of modernism as a field, as one of the richest fields in English language writing. Finally, though, this really is a course in poetry, plain and simple.

I mean to introduce you to particular poems, to give you ways to possess them, enjoy them, be puzzled or frustrated by them too; to learn something from them and to care about them and to carry them with you as you go forward after this class.

PTE SST – Black Fly

Black fly bites cause blindness. Black flies use blade-like mouthparts to slash the skin and feed on blood. Bites are concentrated on exposed areas of skin, especially along the hairline, feet, ankles and arms. They can produce reactions from small red spots with little or no irritation to a lot of irritation and swelling.

The severity of the problem becomes clear when we consider the exposure rate. In West Africa, one person may get ten thousand bites each year. This incredibly high number is what makes the situation so dangerous. It’s not a single bite that causes harm, but the cumulative effect of thousands from infected flies.

The real danger isn’t the bite itself, but a parasitic worm called Onchocerca volvulus that some black flies carry. Volvulus following repeated bites by infected black flies can lead to blindness. The body’s reaction to the parasite’s offspring, called microfilariae, causes the damage. Persons with heavy infections will usually have one or more of the three conditions: skin rash (usually itchy), eye diseases, and nodules under the skin. These flies hide in the skin during daytime and migrate from the skin to the surface at night, which is a result of evolution selection.

PTE SST – Service and Goods

The journey of globalization has been far smoother for goods than for services. The lack of globalization in your job can be attributed to the challenges involved in transporting services across borders, which is more complicated than shipping goods. This difference comes down to a fundamental characteristic: services face difficulties in crossing borders due to the inherent nature of their delivery. We can understand this through two main arguments. First, many services require the physical presence of both the provider and the buyer at the same location and time. Second, overcoming the technical obstacles of bringing service providers from one country into contact with service buyers from another country has limited the globalization of services, compared to the globalization of goods. Thus, the focus of globalization has predominantly been on the production of physical goods rather than service-related activities. However, this old limitation is rapidly disappearing. The advent of digital technology is revolutionizing this landscape by enabling individuals in one nation to easily conduct activities in another.

PTE SST – Bee Hive

At the heart of a thriving honeybee hive, the queen reigns as the vital source of life. Devoted to her duties, the queen tirelessly lays up to 2500 eggs per day, amounting to an incredible two million throughout her lifespan. Comprising the majority of the colony, the hardworking worker bees are all female. Within a typical hive of approximately 30,000 bees, merely 100 of them are males known as drones. With their large eyes and robust bodies, drones rely on the workers for sustenance since they lack the ability to gather pollen or nectar. As the summer wears on, the demanding labor takes its toll on the workers, who live only about 30 days before succumbing to their efforts. However, the hive remains continuously supplied with new generations of bees, eager to begin their toil from the moment they emerge.

PTE SST – Multiculturalism

Multiculturalism is an important aspect of our society, as it encourages us to embrace and appreciate the diverse cultures that make up our world. This concept promotes the idea that we should not only tolerate, but also celebrate and learn from the differences in our society. Rather than expecting everyone to conform to one dominant culture, multiculturalism encourages respect for individual traditions and beliefs. This approach has a powerful positive effect. By recognizing and valuing cultural diversity, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious society where everyone feels they belong. This is in contrast to the idea of a melting pot, where diversity is expected to disappear as everyone assimilates into one homogeneous culture. Embracing multiculturalism allows us to broaden our understanding of the world and fosters a sense of unity and acceptance amongst different groups. Ultimately, it is through respecting and celebrating our differences that we can create a more vibrant and enriching society for all.

PTE SST – Paper Windmill

Wind turbine is a device that will convert wind into mechanical movement, which we can use to power water pump or electricity generator. Now the power that the turbine creates is obviously dependent on the wind speed, it’s also dependent obviously on the number of sails, the area of the sails and the angle of the sails makes to the wind. So if you can imagine if the turbine blades are flat onto the wind, the wind is just gonna sort of bend it, but if there is slight angle when the wind hits it, it’s gonna turn the blades. We can use that for powering things. Now, we’re gonna have a go, making some very, very simple paper windmills, a sort of things you can make from the bits and pieces lying around at home, and use that to drive a very small generator to power electronic devices.

PTE SST – Energy of Internet

The internet, the most powerful tool in terms of engineering made by humans, has the most complicated structure. What we call the Internet is made up of a lot of things, wires traversing the ocean, satellites and cell phone towers, massive data centers sending packets of information all over and devices. The internet can be connected via a modem, or an ADSL switch center, to a local landline telephone exchange network. It can connect us from Sydney to Melbourne and then to the U.S.. However, it takes energy for the transmission system to transmit information. For example, the longer email you write, the more energy is consumed. Meanwhile, there are more than 30 billion things connected to the Internet, like cell phones, laptops, credit card readers, smart TV, and so on, and each of them requires electricity. In total, Internet-connected devices probably use around five percent of the world’s electricity. And most of the electricity comes from burning fossil fuels, which release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

PTE SST – Dancing Bees

Honeybees do a waggle dance to direct other bees to sources of nectar, but dancing bees like this one can be halted by a headbutt from another bee. Now, researchers have found that this headbutt is actually a warning signal. A feeding station was set up in the lab to mimic a source of nectar. Then foraging bees were introduced to dangers at the station, such as competition from rival colonies. When foragers returned to the hive, they stopped bees dancing. Scientists think the behavior warns dancers of a dangerous source of nectar.

PTE SST – Population Growth

I hereby not even to elaborate too much why I think it is that population matters in the world. These are the kind of topics which are normally cited when when thinking about the population, its challenges, its problems, its opportunities, its own problems. After all, pressure on resource is a very obvious point. When world population has reached now 7 billion and is increasing by 7 to 8 million people per year, a diminishing number of course. But nonetheless it’s still quite a challenge, particularly when global population is almost certain to add another 3 billion to that 6 billion with all kinds of questions as to the adequacy of resources, water, particularly in global climate change, but also food and other aspects of resources. These are all problems of security because this growth will not be equally distributed between different parts of the world. Some parts of the world will grow. Other parts of the world will shrink. The balance of power, therefore, will correspondingly change for demographic reasons, as we will see. Urban growth is remarkable. We already have megacities of 20 million people. These are going to grow even further in due course. One wonders just how far they can grow before certain aspects of the infrastructure start breaking down.
