The twenty one portraits on display depict key figures in literature, film and fashion from the early 1960s. Two decades ago, Kashmiri houseboat-owners rubbed their hands every spring at the prospect of the annual influx of tourists. From May to October, the hyacinth-choked waters of Dal Lake saw flotillas of vividly painted Shikaras carrying Indian families, boho westerners, young travelers and wide-eyed Japenese. Carpet-sellers honed their skills, as did purveyors of anything remotely embroidered while the house boats initiated by the British Raj provided unusual accommodation. The economy boomed. Then, in 1989, separatist and Islamist militancy attacked and everything changed. Hindus and countless Kashmiri business people bolted, at least 35,000 people were killed in a decade, the lake stagnated, and the houseboats rotted. Any foreigners venturing there risked their lives, proved in 1995 when five young Europeans were kidnapped and murdered.

3.Fresh Water

Everybody needs fresh water. Without water people, animals and plants cannot live. Although a few plants and animals can make do with saltwater, all humans need a constant supply of fresh water if they are to stay fit and healthy. Of the total supply of water on the Earth, only about 3 percent of it is fresh, and most of that is stored as ice and snow at the poles, or is so deep under the surface of the Earth that we cannot get to it. Despite so much of the water being out of reach, we still have a million cubic miles of it that we can use. That’s about 4,300,000 cubic kilometers of fresh water to share out between most of the plants, animals and people on the planet.

Green spaces contribute significantly to a reduction of soil and aerial temperatures during spells of hot weather, so contributing to human wellbeing. In the garden context , there is, however, little information as to what extent various types of plants differ in their cooling potential and how certain planting combinations may maximise cooling under a scenario of low rainfall and minimal water inputs.

3.Active Learning Classrooms

Active learning classrooms (ALCs) are student-centered, technology-rich classrooms. They are easily identified with their large circular tables and movable seating designed to improve student engagement in class. Typically, each table is accompanied by a whiteboard and flat-screen monitor to display student work and larger rooms frequently have miniature bulb and microphones and at each table. In this way, students are able to signal if they have questions or want to speak to the entire room. ALCs provide the hands-on environment that has transformed old class from passive lecture to very active group design work.

Fill in the Blanks is one of the most important sections for the PTE exam preparation, because it contributes around 30% of reading score. You will use approximately 2 minutes time for each question, and each PTE-A test will have 4-5 questions for Reading Fill in the Blanks and 5-6 questions for Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks. You will get 1 credit when each blank is correctly completed with the minimum total score is 0.

This task will consume more time if you don’t approach it in the right manner. The most important skill for this task is speed and accuracy. Therefore, skimming a long paragraph and highlighting only the required information will save some precious time in the PTE reading exam.

How can I get higher score in the Fill in the Blanks?

Quickly read through the text to get an idea of the topic. You need make sure you leave enough time to finish all questions in the Reading section. You should take no more than 2 minutes to complete each Fill in the Blanks task. There are always some blanks which are easier than the others. Instead of getting stuck at a difficult blank, move on the next and try to fill in all the ones which you find easy.

Make it a habit to read something every day. A general website such as NPR or BBC is preferred because it can expose you to a variety of topics. Furthermore, you can also directly read our real exam materials to get more familiar with different sentence structure and word usage patterns. Your mind will pick on these in the exam and you will find fill in the blanks much easier.

A good vocabulary is critical for any English exam but is especially useful in this question type. Check out the PTE academic collocation list if you haven’t already done so. In addition, you need to learn right use of words that have similar meaning. For example, you might come across two words that have similar meaning and get confused as to which one will fit in the blank. In this case, you should firstly look for the prepositions, verbs, nouns with the blank. And then see the context of the sentence.

3.Ozone Damange

Clones of an Eastern cottonwood (Populus deltoides) in the Bronx and other city spots grew to double the biomass of clones planted outside small towns upstate or on Long Island, says Jillian Gregg, now of the Environmental Protection Agency’s western-ecology division in Corvallis, Ore. The growth gap comes from ozone damage, she and her New York colleagues report. Ozone chemists have known that concentrations may spike skyscraper high in city air, but during a full 24 hours, rural trees actually get a higher cumulative ozone exposure from urban pollution that blows in and lingers. A series of new experiments now shows that this hang-around ozone is the overwhelming factor in tree growth, the researchers say in the July 10 Nature. “This study has profound importance in showing us most vividly that rural areas pay the price for urban pollution,” says Stephen P. Long of the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. “This work should be a wake-up call,” he adds.
