1. Get to know how you are scored

Number of questions: 6~7 questions
Scoring: Contributes scores to both Speaking and Reading
Negative marking: No
Time to Answer: 35~40 seconds to prepare, 35~40 seconds to record your response

This question type is simple and easy for those who study and work in an English speaking environment. Most of them have to read news, give presentations, or read articles at work or school. However, if you are not used to read out English texts for others, you will need more practice. Because reading a text is very different from reading it aloud. You have to make others understand the meaning of the sentences that you are reading. You can score high marks in Read Aloud questions if you can do this well.

So, reading the content accurately is very important. It means that you should read all words correctly without missing a word, otherwise you will lose marks. Moreover, oral fluency and pronunciation also reflect on your scores. You should read sentences as natural and fluent as you can.

2. Use your preparation time efficiently

You will have 35 to 40 seconds to prepare your Read Aloud questions before the microphone opens up and starts recording. So use this time to become familiar with the text. Try to rehearse and understand the theme of the text, and quickly skim through the text. When you have some new words which you have never seen before, try to guess the meaning and possible pronunciation. Make sure you don’t skip or stop at the parts that you have new words, because it results in losing your fluency score.

Once the microphone starts recording, keep your eyes on the text in the screen and start speaking. When speaking, it is important to note where to pause, where to raise or lower your voice, and which words to emphasise.

3. Find out some words that you can emphasise on

This is one of the very significant points in our list of PTE Read Aloud tips and tricks! When people speak naturally, we highlight the words that carry meanings and information. This skill is a sign of good speaking as it describes that you know which parts of sentence are more important, and you also have ability to pass on these information to others.

4. Start reading as soon as the microphone turns on

You will hear a beep sound and see the recording status on the screen, which is your sign to begin speaking. If you hesitate, it will be considered as a negative performance. More over, don’t override what you decided earlier during your preparation.

5. Understand your pace

You should understand what is the right pace for you, whether you should speak fast or slower. Try to find out a proper pace that you can speak fast and clear. If you speak faster, it may sound more fluent. But it sometimes sounds unclear as you can muddle the speech. Try speaking at different paces, listen and decide what is best for you.

6. Record your answers and listen when you practice

This is the best way to find out your mistakes and wrong pronunciations as well as your pace. Record your answers when you practice before taking your test. You can also get a friend or someone more fluent in English listen to it, and suggest to you what need to improve. Always practice with authentic PTE test materials, listen to all of your recordings with focusing on area for further improvement.

7. Vary your tone properly

Intonation is very important in PTE Read Aloud, without it you will sound like a robot. Usually when you begin your sentence, you raise your tone and when you come to the end of a sentence, you lower your tone. This is an easy guideline to follow. Your voice should have that wave like effect.

8. Speak in larger chunks

Someone who is good in English, usually can read and speak a bigger part of a sentence. You should try to speak a bigger part of the sentence in one go. When you practice, start by speaking 2-3 words at a time, then gradually increase the number of words you can speak in one go. But don’t set a fixed pattern when speaking, mix it and make it sound natural.

9.Speak loudly and with full force

It is important that your response is captured properly by the microphone. Only then can the software assess it in the right way. Ignore the others sitting around you in the exam room and just focus on your own speaking. Don’t mumble words, they should come out of your mouth completely.

10.Go to the next question if you finish early

Very simple but important point in our PTE Read Aloud Tips and Tricks list – Go to next! Don’t wait for the recording timer to finish. You don’t want to fill your response with unnecessary silences.
