PTE Preparation Fill in the Blanks Tips

Fill in the Blanks is one of the most important sections for the PTE exam preparation, because it contributes around 30% of reading score. You will use approximately 2 minutes time for each question, and each PTE-A test will have 4-5 questions for Reading Fill in the Blanks and 5-6 questions for Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks. You will get 1 credit when each blank is correctly completed with the minimum total score is 0.

This task will consume more time if you don’t approach it in the right manner. The most important skill for this task is speed and accuracy. Therefore, skimming a long paragraph and highlighting only the required information will save some precious time in the PTE reading exam.

Quickly read through the text to get an idea of the topic. You need make sure you leave enough time to finish all questions in the Reading section. You should take no more than 2 minutes to complete each Fill in the Blanks task. There are always some blanks which are easier than the others. Instead of getting stuck at a difficult blank, move on the next and try to fill in all the ones which you find easy.

Make it a habit to read something every day. A general website such as NPR or BBC is preferred because it can expose you to a variety of topics. Furthermore, you can also directly read our real exam materials to get more familiar with different sentence structure and word usage patterns. Your mind will pick on these in the exam and you will find fill in the blanks much easier.

A good vocabulary is critical for any English exam but is especially useful in this question type. Check out the PTE academic collocation list if you haven’t already done so. In addition, you need to learn right use of words that have similar meaning. For example, you might come across two words that have similar meaning and get confused as to which one will fit in the blank. In this case, you should firstly look for the prepositions, verbs, nouns with the blank. And then see the context of the sentence.
