PTE Summarize Group Discussion – Robot
Narration: three students are discussing how to design a robot.
Speaker1: I’ve been thinking about our robot design project lately. I think the most important thing for us is to pick the right materials. We need to keep our spending under control and stay within our budget, so we can finish making a usable robot without wasting money. On top of that, the robot has to move around easily inside different buildings, so mobility is really key for us.
Speaker2: I agree completely. Staying on budget and keeping the design simple are our main goals. The cheap batteries we can afford are good for saving money, but they are really heavy, which will make the robot hard to move. To fix this problem, we should use lighter materials. We can use aluminum for the main body and plastic for the outer cover to make the robot lighter overall. I also suggest adding six replaceable wheels, so we can change them easily if they break.
Speaker3: Using light materials and replaceable wheels sounds really good. But I have a small suggestion about the wheels. I think we should use rubber wheels instead of normal ones. Rubber wheels grip the ground better, so the robot can move more smoothly. This is really helpful, especially on rough and bumpy ground in construction areas.
Speaker1: That’s a great point. I didn’t think about how rough the working area could be before. Since the robot needs to work in construction sites and buildings, it has to fit different kinds of ground. Besides choosing good wheels and materials, we should keep our whole design simple and easy to build, so we can finish putting it together and testing it on time without going over budget.
Speaker2: Exactly. Rubber wheels are definitely better, as they stop the robot from slipping and help it move steadily on bad ground. I also think we shouldn’t make the robot too fancy at first. It’s much better to build a simple, working robot first, instead of trying to add too many complicated features right away.
Speaker3: I totally agree with this idea. If we make a simple robot first, we can test how well it moves, how long the battery lasts and find out any small problems. For example, we can check if the wheels wear out quickly or if the heavy battery slows the robot down. Then we can fix these issues and improve our design later on.
Speaker1: That’s such a good plan. At the beginning, we just need to focus on using light materials, saving money and making sure the robot works well in different places. Once we finish the first simple version and it can move normally in buildings and construction areas, we can start adding new features and making it better.
Speaker2: That’s right. After we test our basic robot, we can upgrade its parts and add new functions step by step based on our test results. This way, we won’t waste money on unnecessary designs, and our robot will work much better after we keep improving it.
Speaker3: I think this step-by-step way of designing and improving the robot is perfect for our project. With light materials, non-slip rubber wheels and continuous small upgrades, our robot will be cheap to make and work really well in all kinds of places.
